Role models are important. Seeing someone they can identify with is one of the key ways for young men and women to dream about their futures – what they want to do “when they grow up!” For girls, it has only been in recent years that they have seen more and more women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. By being exposed to the women who are working and excelling in these fields, girls build confidence that these are fields for women as well as for men, and they feel more comfortable thinking about education and careers in these fields.
I am thrilled to be part of a group sponsoring an upcoming event where girls (and anyone!) can meet an accomplished woman – Christina H. Koch – as she receives the 2020 Global ATHENA Leadership Award in a virtual event co-hosted by analytics leader SAS. This event is open and free for anyone who wants to join – all ages, all genders, globally. Join me in honoring astronaut (and fellow North Carolina State University alum), Christina H. Koch for her accomplishments and as the role model she is for young women!
